Infertility Care Center in Bangladesh - Dr. Kamrun Nahar

Infertility is the inability of a man or female to conceive as a result of an issue with either partner’s reproductive system. One can have primary or secondary infertility.

  • Primary infertility – where someone who’s never conceived a child in the past has difficulty conceiving.
  • Secondary infertility – where someone has had 1 or more pregnancies in the past, but is having difficulty conceiving again.

The main symptom of infertility is not getting pregnant. There may be no other obvious symptoms. Sometimes, women with infertility may have irregular or absent

menstrual periods. In some cases, men with infertility may have some signs of hormonal problems, such as changes in hair growth or sexual function

 What causes infertility?

There are many possible causes of infertility, and fertility problems can affect either partner. But in a quarter of cases it is not possible to identify the cause. Common causes of infertility include:Common Causes of male infertility

  • Abnormal sperm production or function:due to genetic flaws, health issues including diabetes, undescended testicles, genetic deformities, or infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, the mumps, or HIV. Varicocele, or enlarged veins in the testes, can also lower sperm quality.
  • Problems with the delivery of sperm:because of sexual issues like early ejaculation, hereditary conditions like cystic fibrosis, anatomical issues such a blockage in the testicle, or harm or injury to the reproductive organs.
  • Overexposure to certain environmental factors:such as radiation, chemicals, and insecticides. Fertility can also be impacted by cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, marijuana use, anabolic steroids, and prescription drugs for depression, high blood pressure, and bacterial infections. Regular heat exposure, like that found in saunas or hot tubs, can increase body temperature and have an impact on sperm production.
  • Damage related to cancer and its treatment:including chemotherapy or radiation. Sperm production can be negatively impacted by cancer treatment, sometimes significantly.

Common Causes of female infertility

  • Ovulation disorders:may influence the ovaries’ ability to release eggs. Among them are endocrine conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome. The hormone that increases the production of breast milk, prolactin, which is present in excess amounts in the condition known as hyperprolactinemia, may also prevent ovulation. Menstrual cycle disruption or infertility can result from either too much (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism) thyroid hormone. Overexercising, eating problems, or malignancies are examples of additional underlying reasons.
  • Uterine or cervical abnormalities:including uterine polyps, cervicofacial abnormalities, or uterine shape. Uterine fibroids, which are benign (noncancerous) tumors of the uterine wall, can prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus or block the fallopian tubes, both of which can result in infertility.
  • Fallopian tube damage or blockage:often caused by inflammation of the fallopian tube (salpingitis). This can result from pelvic inflammatory disease, which is usually caused by a sexually transmitted infection, endometriosis or adhesions.
  • Endometriosis:which occurs when endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus, may affect the function of the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency (early menopause):when menstruation stops before age 40 and the ovaries quit functioning. Early menopause has some risk factors, including immune system disorders, genetic problems like Turner syndrome or carriers of Fragile X syndrome, radiation or chemotherapy treatment, and other ailments, even if the cause is frequently unclear.

The age of the couple seeking to conceive, the length of the infertility, the couple’s personal preferences, and their overall health will all influence the course of treatment to aid in natural conception.
