IUI Treatment in Dhaka, Bangladesh - Dr. Kamrun Nahar

IUI, also referred to as intrauterine insemination or “artificial insemination,” is a type of fertility therapy that promotes conception by bringing prepared, high-quality sperm near to the egg for fertilization. It entails injecting donor or partner sperm into your uterus around the time you ovulate normally. Two weeks later, you can test for pregnancy. An IUI cycle typically lasts four weeks, and it is often performed without the use of fertility drugs.

IUI is frequently performed over several cycles until pregnancy is achieved or a different treatment is explored. IUI is used to treat many kinds of infertility. Before pursuing more intrusive procedures like in-vitro fertilization, IUI is frequently tried first (IVF). IUI might be suggested if:

  • You experience ovulation issues. IUI can be combined with fertility medications to increase the number of eggs you generate.
  • Your infertility is unexplained. The fallopian tubes must be open, healthy, and unblocked for IUI to be successful. There also needs to be enough healthy, motile sperm accessible. If not, IVF might be a better line of action.
  • You are using donor sperm
  • Your spouse previously stored his sperm in the freezer.

The Procedure of IUI

The procedure is simple and virtually painless, though it’s normal to feel nervous about it. It doesn’t require any medications or painkillers and takes just a few minutes to complete.

Semen Collection

If you’re using donor sperm, it will be prepped and defrosted. In that case, your spouse will visit the clinic that day to provide a sample of semen. Similar to how a semen analysis is carried out, the semen sample is obtained by masturbation. Your spouse may be able to use a sterile home collection kit if they are unable to provide a semen sample in the clinic. Remember that for this technique, the sample must be transported to the office within an hour of collection and maintained at body temperature until they arrive.

Semen Washing

Sperm are not the only components of semen. Your doctor will subject the semen to a unique “washing” process that removes contaminants and leaves only what is required for conception.

IUI Procedure

You will lie down on a gynecological table for the surgery itself, just like you would for your annual exam. You will have a catheter—a brief, delicate tube—inserted into your cervix. You might experience some little cramping, not unlike what you might experience during a Pap exam. The catheter will next be used to insert the carefully cleaned semen into your uterus. The catheter is then taken out, and you are finished. The sperm is delivered straight to your uterus. They have nowhere to go but up to the egg that is already waiting in your fallopian tubes.

As with any fertility treatment, a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant increase as she gets older. If you take fertility medications to stimulate your natural cycle, you’re also more likely to become pregnant. When weighing the costs of treatment, it is important to keep in mind that many women may undergo multiple rounds of IUI before experiencing a successful pregnancy.
